SWBF2 multiplayer is now powered by GOG Galaxy, and allows for crossplay with Steam users, as well. The only servers available are player-hosted servers. The dedicated server software has not been updated. Most large mods will break (but you can fix them).

Oct 2, 2017 AFAIK most mods lets you play multiplayer, just depends on which ones you are using. You definitely won't be banned, at least that was true before the current update. I can't speak for that but I doubt they made modding a bannable offense.

If its just an aesthetic mod (like replacing Rey with Asoka) and it doesnt alter any functionality of the game its totally fine. If its a new hero with custom ability then you cant play multiplayer with it. Kyber servers have full mod support. There's new heroes, new reinforcements and new modes.
