The ANU Medical School offers medical students the opportunity to study Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, through lectures, research project opportunities and cultural activities within their 4 year medical program.
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health team at the Medical School has three new staff all with a passion and experience in Indigenous health. Dr Stewart Sutherland, Chair of Indigenous Health is a Wiradjuri man with over a decade of experience working in Indigenous health.
In this course students will develop an understanding of the health issues confronting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the 21st century, and their basis in Aboriginal and Torres Strain Islander post-colonization history.
Explain the impact of Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander post-colonization history on Indigenous culture, and the subsequent impact on prevention, definition, diagnosis & treatment of illness. Identify and describe features of overt, subtle & structural discrimination in interactions between patients, health professionals and systems.
The Indigenous Health Stream within the ANU Medical School, allows a small cohort of Indigenous and non-Indigenous students the opportunity to undertake targeted research in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and Wellbeing. Highlights.
